AND THE CREATION OF
J A N U A R Y - M A R C H 2 0 2 0
Rosie Herrera conducted a creative residency with New Dialect from January 13 - February 6, 2020. She began her residency by leading a weeklong dance theater workshop during our annual Winter Intensive (January 13-17).
Following the Intensive, she spent four weeks collaborating with our company dancers in the creation of First Fruit, which premiered at OZ Arts Nashville alongside Banning Bouldin’s The Triangle on February 20-23, 2020.
Nashville Scene described First Fruit as “a playful and often passionate study in human connection and control, featuring vibrant colors and a seemingly endless supply of Post-it notes.”
While she was in town, Rosie also led two workshops built around her creative practice: a theater-game class for students at Hispanic Family Foundation’s Baila Dance Studio and a master class for adults at Centennial Performing Arts Studios.
As part of the Herrera Project, participants from our workshop at Baila were invited to a special dress rehearsal of First Fruit at OZ Arts Nashville on February 19.
Following the premiere at OZ Arts, our plan was to take First Fruit out of the theater for a series of free-to-the-public installations, including one at Plaza Mariachi on March 21. But then COVID-19 thwarted our plans.

footage of Rosie performing her solo work Cookie’s Kid
“Cookie’s Kid, the first solo piece by the always intriguing Rosie Herrera, has many of the same ingredients as her group works: the lusciously beautiful images; the pop iconography; the disorienting swings from self-conscious camp to desperation.... Herrera seemed to have made a psychological excavation of her own body - intense, interior, opaque.”
